Our Lady
Crucified

I was a very nominal Catholic as a youth and fell away from the faith completely in my teens due to the hypocrisy I saw everywhere without understanding that the "chaff and the wheat would grow together." (Mt 13) I lived life on my own terms for a time. When I was 22, events caused me to re-evaluate that way of living. I came to realize that I knew very little about the faith I was born into and was compelled to scrutinize the Church and Her claims. I found several supports for the Church’s claims:

  1. Secular history affirms the Catholic Church's claim of being the earliest church (Tacitus, Pliny the Younger, Suetonius, and Josephus) and that all of the current splits in Christianity find their origin in the Catholic Church.
  2. Writings of the early Church Fathers are consistent with Her Traditions.
  3. That the Catholic Church is responsible for the compilation and discernment of the Sacred Scriptures in the 4th century supports Her claim as the sole authoritative interpreter of Scripture. The Doctrine of the Church has never changed even though some of her disciplines have.
  4. Miracles attributed to Christ and Mary throughout the ages are so numerous and outstanding that they are difficult to ignore; especially since secular scientists have verified the results of many of these miracles although they are unable to explain them.
  5. Evidence of transubstantiation.
  6. Christ made several promises to His Church which are difficult to ignore:
  • He gave authority to Peter and promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against His Church: Mt 16.13-20
  • He would be present until the end of the age: Mt 28.18-20
  • Eternal life to those who partake of His flesh and blood: Jn 6
  • That he would send the Holy Spirit to teach everything and remind them of what He had already taught: Jn 14.25-26, Jn 16.12-15
  • He gave authority to the apostles, and in turn their legitimate successors, and the ability to forgive sins in His name: John 20.21-23

Some other points:

  • All schismatics have had their own "interpretations" that didn't agree. Their sentiments, however, are very much reminiscent of Aaron and Miriam in Numbers, chapter 12 and Korah, Dathan, and Abiram in Numbers, chapter 16. Seriously consider the differing opinions of Arius, Photius, John Wyclif, John Hus, John Knox, Martin Luther, Henry VIII, John Calvin, John Smith, John Wesley, Joseph Smith, Charles Russell, and all the others.
  • If you are an atheist, seriously look at the "reasoning and evidence" of those who are so very hostile to the Church. If you are open and honest, you will find numerous contradictions and outright lies.
  • If you are not a Catholic Christian, take the time to get to know what the Church actually teaches rather than accepting the propaganda and "interpretations" of others and honestly consider the points above.
  • Refusing to accept a truth is not refuting it.

Although each of these points could possibly be discounted individually, together they point to the existence of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and to the Catholic Church as His primary Institution for the purpose salvation. Unfortunately, with the problem of so many modernists within the Church, it is sometimes difficult to find good references for the faith, so I have made a list for anyone who is interested in reading more. May your heart and mind be opened to the Way, the Truth, and the Life so that you may have Him and have Him to the full.
